The photos in this post come from SquareAmerica.com . It's a great site and an excellent resource for found, antique photographs.

Although this blog focuses on the 1950s and 1960s, these photographs from the 1920s - 1940s were too amazing to omit.

This set of three is among my favorite sets so far. I'm from the Southside of Chicago (I still reside here) and 31st and 35th street beaches were among my favorites in highschool. And this was in 2001-2005... To think now of the history, of teenagers and young people enjoying the same sands 70 years prior, is a powerful way to put things into perspective.

1920s

All the pictures from Chicago I found really whet my interest in the black history of my city. I've got 4 library books I'll be posting about in the coming days that illuminate several Chicago neighborhoods and the urban experience in 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s Chicago.

Interspersed between my posts about old Chicago will be pictures from old L.A., and more from SquareAmerica.com - this time from the 50s and 60s.
