Vintage African American / Black photos from the 1920s-1940s

The photos in this post come from SquareAmerica.com . It's a great site and an excellent resource for found, antique photographs.

Although this blog focuses on the 1950s and 1960s, these photographs from the 1920s - 1940s were too amazing to omit.

1947.
Caption reads:
Christmas 1947. L to R: Hortense G. White, Mr. Kenneth Allen, M.D. White’s residence- 1105-18th Ave No. Nashville, TN. Draperies & Decoration by Dr. Kathryn White. 2 cock fight chairs.

1936 in Chicago at 31st street beach.

This set of three is among my favorite sets so far. I'm from the Southside of Chicago (I still reside here) and 31st and 35th street beaches were among my favorites in highschool. And this was in 2001-2005... To think now of the history, of teenagers and young people enjoying the same sands 70 years prior, is a powerful way to put things into perspective.

1920s

All the pictures from Chicago I found really whet my interest in the black history of my city. I've got 4 library books I'll be posting about in the coming days that illuminate several Chicago neighborhoods and the urban experience in 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s Chicago.

Interspersed between my posts about old Chicago will be pictures from old L.A., and more from SquareAmerica.com - this time from the 50s and 60s.

Christella Moody's Memories

I'm recommending Christella Moody's blog to everyone.

http://christella-moodythoughts.blogspot.com/

About the blog:

The Sunset Years - A blog of memories and thoughts after living over 70 years. Our generation lived through more cultural and technological changes than any other generation. We lived through WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and Iraq. We participated in the Civil Rights Revolution, going from the back of the bus to the Presidency of the United States of America. It has been some ride.

The pictures are amazing and the stories Christella Moody has to tell, even more so.

These pictures, this blog, and Christella Moody's touching and powerful memories are a true treasure.

More New Dresses

Posted on 2:20 PM by feeqwfqewef

I'll list these as soon as my new dress from arrives. The ones I used for the launch were on loan from one of my mom's knitting pals, Angie. It'll be great to have my own!

On to the dresses:

Hot pink farm-oriented Novelty print babydoll dress. 100% cotton.

Late 1960s / Early 70s Pastel Pink party dress. Pearlized buttons, high collar, quilted shoulders.

Ethnic cotton tunic with collar embroidery, beading, and studding. Cotton.

Because I'm new to this, I think I get REALLY excited while shopping and that compromises my eye a bit. These pieces are fine, but in the future, I'll DEFINITELY be more exact with my acquisitions. I want to keep to the 50s and 60s, which is far more difficult than I had imagined it would be!
